No weight problem in the 1970s? Anecdotally, go back and look at street footage from the US and there are big old fat folk all over the place. Scientifically, go back and look at how the BMI index, and other similar measures, have been moved around over time.

Otherwise, what this guy is saying is awesome good eating advice. Dr. C. Leigh Broadhurst preached the same thing for years and Ray Cronise has dusted it off too.

Well Drew and Adam, as much as you guys like the science of things then you should consider how wrong this guy is on some of his information.

Such as oh, eggs, dairy, meat, etc. Sure if you look at isolated parts of how eggs work in the body yes they can be healthy but if you actually look at the whole picture you cannot deny how bad they are for you.

    Fruit and sugar:

    http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-much-fruit-is-too-much/

White potato is about the only thing that he got right, but for different reasons:

    Grains (oats):

    http://nutritionfacts.org/video/can-oatmeal-help-fatty-liver-disease/

Much of the information that he talked about as being the truth about food sounds as if he is repeating and combining various common tropes about foods and diet in combination with second or third source materials, such at other people’s books rather that original studies in their whole context rather than slicing and dicing.

The videos I put above are just small samples of the thousands of videos that he has up.

His diet sounds like a hybrid of atkins and the zone with a sprinkle of obvious advice like staying away from processed foods. The rest of his diet, while helping to speed weight loss, does not make it a great for you to eat long-term.

I highly recommend going to: http://nutritionfacts.org/ and watching the THOUSANDS if videos covering just about every food you can name and how they impact the human body.

    Dr Greger’s qualifications:

Dr. Greger is a physician, author, and internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues. A founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, Dr. Greger is licensed as a general practitioner specializing in clinical nutrition. Currently he serves as the public health director at the Humane Society of the United States. Dr. Greger is a graduate of the Cornell University School of Agriculture and the Tufts University School of Medicine. (nutritionfacts.org)

Hopefully I dropped in more than enough video links to get people to think about what the studies show compared to what this guy is claiming. If not, then just go to Nutritionfacts.org and pick a topic of your choice and learn more and see how other people’s advice that are selling their service or books, lines up with the real world data

OK so let me get this straight. Sugar — even that found in fruit, even the glucose in a potato — is bad because according to Vinnie they will get turned into long chain triglycerides which are very hard to burn. But butter and cream with all of their pre-existing long chain triglycerides — bring on the chowder, just leave out the flour — the problem today is not enough of this fat? Sugar and carbs prevent fat mobilization but pour on the MCT oil (talk about totally empty calories) and the distilled spirits. Hello Mr. Tortorich, why do you hate on your liver so much? Seriously. nothing suppresses fat burning like alcohol, and if you’re really concerned about processing the crap out of something, yes that’s MCT.

Vinnie uses Gary Taubes’ analogy of assembling furniture in a room. Nice analogy, but even Gary knows that fats are constantly converted from triglycerides to fatty acids and back again regardless of the nutritional state of a person. (It’s even in Good Calories, Bad Calories) The mobilization of fat (lipolysis) is not the burning of fat (oxidation) and at the end of the day it’s the calories that count.

It has been shown over and over, that the conversion of carb to fat is a quantitatively insignificant metabolic pathway in humans. On the order of a few grams from hundreds of grams of carbs when in substantial caloric excess. Like a teaspoon of butter from loaves of bread.

I realize this is all in the interests of entertainment, but try mixing a few facts in here and there.

P.S. Adam you are hysterical as always.

Evelyn (Carbsane) is another interesting and worthy guest for the show, and would be an excellent counter to this LCHF point of view presented by Vinnie.

Even if this guy were right, it’ll be the same thing: one week movie theater popcorn is ok to eat, the next week it is bad. Personally I do not believe this man one bit. I think as we all know, it comes down to calories. Yes there are good fats that we should all have, but do we really need to drink an entire gallon of whole milk and a stick of butter to get those good fats? I don’t think so. I’m really ashamed that Adam and Dr. Drew had this person on their show, esp. Dr. Drew – he should know better than this.

You should have Lyle McDonald back on your show to talk nutrition and training. That was an excellent episode and was some years back–time to catch up, perhaps?
